  I had a good experience at McMaster when it came to delivering my first child last week, however, there was definitely one thing that in hindsight would have been extremely beneficial for me and quite possibly any other first time moms: I would have loved to of had a lactation consultation on the first day and/or night with my baby. As our baby was delivered by c-section my milk was prolonged coming in and so breastfeeding was a challenge from the get go. Adding to the confusion, my husband and I both found it difficult to get a handle on breastfeeding as each nurse that attended to us during our two night stay gave different opinions on breastfeeding - from how baby should be held, to their latch, to the duration nursing should take per breast, etc. - which only added to the overwhelming sensation that a lactation consultant could have avoided from the beginning. In the end, after being discharged my husband and I returned to McMaster for a lactation consult and we left feeling reassured, confident and moreover happy with our experience. That being said, I would highly recommend, as well as think it extremely beneficial for first time moms, if they were seen by a lactation consultant from the beginning, or at the very least given the option.
